I replaced the resistor and the wires hooked up to it still get hot

if you are stating that the resistors are getting hot ... that is what they are designed to do

The 4 wires hooked up to the resistor get hot enough to smoke. That's not normal is it?

The wires were already there. They look a little smaller than the battery cables, they are old though

i would replace them with 4 gauge cables

also make sure your Switch Board with Contacts lugs and Speed Switch Wiper Contact are clean

What should I use to clean the contacts and the speed switch wiper? I changed all the wires going to the resistor to 4 gauge. Those wires and a couple of the battery wires still get hot enough to melt, that's after a short ride. All battery cables and wires between the resistor and the switchboard are tight

Ultra-fine sand paper or scotchbrite should work.
