1983 g1 starting problems
first off i just want to say that i am brand new to this site. ok so i have a 1983 g1 yamaha golf cart i got yesterday for 150 bucks. it sat for two years so i drained the gas check the electrical has spark but sometimes i think it doesnt but for the most part it does. so i put in some regular gas this motor has a seperate oil tank. so i tried firing it up i even primed it with a little gas straight into the carb and nothing only some poping but it seems to wanna go. i really dont see a direct flow going through the gas filter but thers fresh gas in there. so im stuck now. i even cleaned most of the carb. please help.

Re: 1983 g1 starting problems
Welcome !
Ok, so you have spark, but do you have fuel pumping to the carb? Remove the fuel line from the side of the carb, should be the big one, put it in a can or jar, turn the cart over and see if fuel is pumping out of the line. If yes, make sure it's a strong stream, it should pump out pretty decent at intervals...like...pump...pump...pump...pump.... If it does then you might have a plugged carb. Clean carb and retry. If it doesn't pump out or is weak, take off fuel pump and clean, see the sticky at the top of the main page. If it still doesn't pump then you'll need a fuel pump. You can buy one for a G1, for like $50-$80, but I went to my local lawn mower dealer and just bought a generic "pulse operated fuel pump with 1/4" lines for a 10 hp engine". It will be plastic and looks similar to the stock Mikuni pump, but it will work just fine. You'll have to play with the hoses to make sure you have them in the right spot. One line is from tank, one to carb, and one is the vac line (usually the one in the side mounted position). If compression is good then you don't have to worry about that. If that isn't it, it could be ignition related. Might be more complicated to track down. Check for loose or disconnected wires, frayed or broken wires, or even burned/melted wires. |

Thanks for the quick response. I will try to see if I have a flow of fuel tommorow. I already blew the lines out.

Re: 1983 g1 starting problems
So when you crank the engine over there is no fuel coming out of that supply line that hooks on to the side of the carb?
If this is the case, try a new fuel pump. On Ebay for $13.00 but prob like $25 at your local lawn and tractor dealer. It's just a generic vacuum operated fuel pump for small engines. Make sure it has 1/4" lines. |

Re: 1983 g1 starting problems
Do a compression test with wide open throttle and a fully charged battery to make sure it is spinning over properly. You will have low compression if your crankshaft seals are shot. You will also have poor vacum which the fuel pump needs to operate so it is vital to know your compression first before moving on to other items.

Re: 1983 g1 starting problems
Ok I was assuming you did the compression check already. Yeah do that first because if you have low compression you won't get a pulse at the fuel pump.

Re: 1983 g1 starting problems
We kinda jumped around a bit. So to recap:
1.) Check Spark, should be bright white/blue 2.) Check Compression, minimum 100psi but optimum would be 120psi or so. 3.) Check Fuel, remove fuel line at carb and turn over engine, watch for squirt 4.) Check Wiring, look for loose, disconnected, broken, burned wires 5.) Make sure you have fresh fuel, mixed at 50:1 or use stock oil pump setup. If you have done all this and can't find the problem, it might be time for a professional. If you have spark, fuel, and compression, the thing should fire. |
