pour some mixed gas 50:1 in the carb and see what it does, if it starts you have a fuel supply problem. like slo said if you have fuel, fire,&air , it's gonna do something.

I don't know if I'd just go "cheap", some of the cheap stuff is made in China which is hit or miss for quality control. I went with BU...

This one for top end only. You can take it apart and check the tolerances, but really it's just easier to get the kit.

If money is tight, get a piston kit...You'll have to check the cylinder walls for scoring and take it to a machine shop to have it bored one size up. Order the piston first, take the piston with you to the machine shop. They'll set you up.

Gaskets...you'll want head, cylinder base, reed, carb, exhaust.

Seals...yep you'll prob need them too. Here's a link on how to change. Not difficult once you have engine out and clutch and fan off.

And get a service manual before you start anything.

I understand you don't want to spend money if you don't have to but if you keep guessing at the problem because you won't take the time or effort to systematically diagnose the problem then it will cost you more in the long run. A compression test done with a real tester will give you information as to the mechanical state of the engine then allow you to test further or decide on a repair and parts purchase. From your description it seems that you have some compression but how much? Is there enough compression to create combustion? Where are you loosing the compression? rings, crank seals, scored cylinder walls, head gasket? Lets get some actual readings that are informational otherwise it is just a guess and if you throw enough parts at it like that you will solve the problem eventually but it will take more time and money than it needs to.

Well that's your problem. You'll likely need new rings and a hone of the cylinder at best. Your compression should be well into the 100's like 120 or so. At 70 psi it probably won't even run. Once your compression is up your fuel pump should at least have the right amount of pulse to operate, assuming the pump is in good order.

Did you end up getting a universal lawn tractor pump?

Make sure you check the ring end gaps, set the rings so they are resting on the locating pins, put the piston in with the arrow facing exhaust, and check the bore diameter for wear. Don't just throw a set of rings in it, do it right the first time and you'll be happy with the result.

Take some pics!

Might want to do the seals while you have it out. They almost always need replacing, and they aren't expensive.
