You don't have to fully remove it. I always just split the differential case under the vehicle and work on it there. Take one u-bolt loose and let the other side stay connected to hold everything up.

SO, the diff has to come apart? correct

Opened up? Might be easier just to pull the whole thing out

Back again guys, I've got the rear our of my cart. Pulled the motor off and I can turn the input shaft by hand and there is zero play (side to side or up and down) in the shaft. If the input shaft bearings were bad, wouldn't the shaft wobble around??

I can also turn the shaft (axles) with my fingers. No binding at all.

The motor is another story. when I grasp the ROTOR shaft, I can wiggle the rotor from side to side and there is a lot of black dust inside the rear housing and motor. Looks like burnt oil.

The motor wobble is normal when it's out of the vehicle. It relies on the input shaft to keep it centered. Once it's bolted up, the slop goes away and it no longer drags on the field coils. On the vehicle I fixed, I had the same diagnosis as you on the rear differentia. You're dealing with such tight clearances, but if the bearings are worn just minimally and make the input shaft bounce, it causes the motor to drag.

Anything I should watch for when splitting the cases?

Do I need any special tools?
