High Torque Motor: Stutter or Whiplash, WTF?
Along with a lot of rust repair, I replaced the motor in my '95 TXT with a high torque motor from D&D. The electronics in the cart are stock.
Now I have a driveability problem. When going from a stop, light pedal pressure (i.e. just enough to make the solenoid kick) will cause the cart to stutter (a bit violently). A little more pedal and the thing hauls off (minor whiplash) I have gotten better with it but the women and kids (sorry if I offended anyone) struggle, and it seems to be dangerous - they can't control it well in tight places and since they do things like park too close to something else, they have to try a lot of low speed turning. We've had a foot run over, a bike hit, some siding taken off the house, and a bumped head. They don't have the problem with the other cart ('96) because it is mild mannered at low speeds. If they are too close they can do slow speed turns and back up with out getting tossed around. There are fights over the easy cart, so the wife has given the signal to do something. So, first question - is this just life with this kind of motor, or is there another cause. I still have the stock motor and can switch back (though it makes some funky noises). There was no hint of stuttering/jerking with the stock motor. Seems like the stuttering and hard starts would be hard on stuff like the controller and rear end. Perhaps I should change out any way to keep from tearing something up... Comments? Experience? |

I don't know what kind of speed controller you have, given the year, but mine did kinda the same thing a while back.
I have a '98 series with ITS throttle. The 4 wire MOLEX plug got corroded/dirty, until the ITS and/or throttle microswitch failed to make constant contact. It exhibited similar symptoms. |

Grab a manual from the stickies, pull the floormat up, take the metal cover off, then take the cover off the pedal box and follow the ITS adjustment procedure in the manual. Most likely needs ITS adjustment....or could be the controller is toast. I had one act that way from water damage in the controller. It worked but only wide open. Those controllers aren't water proof. My $0.02

Mine does the same thing - my friends, family, wife all do the pull and jerk when they take off.
I believe it happens the worst when driver puts foot on top section of accelerator pedal. If you push closer to the floor you will have less jerkiness on take off. The leverage when foot is on top portion of pedal makes it jerky for most people - trying to think of a good analogy for you but am blocked at the moment. Tell drivers to put there toes on bottom portion of gas pedal - not on top. Bet it works |

Will do the ITS adjustment as discussed above (I have a manual), and work on driver training a bit |

If the ITS is cracked and gets moist or water is present it causes this exact problem...pull the ITS and look at the back side of it where the wires are...it may be cracked...

A high torque D&D motor and stock controller might have something to do with it?
You can test the ITS output and see if it is correct. |
