Son is coming over to do my bearings- I have everything, I THOUGHT, till I realised- I do not know what kind of lube to put back in the rear end-,I did a quick scan of the sticky notes and I am betting I missed it
do I use a standard 90wt?
thanks
cant wait to get it back runnung( thats better than running)

last question for this post- lol I have the basket on the roof, needed or unneeded? keep it? or take it off?

Basket on the roof? Pictures please.

Rear-end oil? That is a hugely long debate, and I have witnessed it cause glorious uprisings comparable to the Hatfield–McCoy feud.

My 93 Marathon manual tells me to use 90wt so that is what I use.

Its alive!!
we got everything ready- pan on- was having tough time figuring out how to refill it
my son convinced me to let the pan gasket dry retighten the bolts and fill on friday night or saturday

35 years ago I would have slammed it together, but I think he is right- lets slow down and make it right

still looking for safe easy way to refill rear end

Right on man.

One of the axle housing shafts may have a vent cap. Unthread it and use a small funnel. Some differential housings have a vent tube at the case just above the pan mounting flange, or this possibly could be plugged with an allen screw plug.

I am glad your son is there to prevent you from slamming it all together in a rush, you raised him well I usually just let the RTV set for a couple hours though, if you wait too long the RTV will set with any voids permanently fixed within the made seal causing a path for future leaks to work out.

Glad your nearing the end of this experience.

Here's a link to the Dana Axel:

FWIW, I used 90 weight gear oil, with a dab of STP oil treatment, for those cold days.
