With ohmmeter,I disconnected wires to each diode, checked with ohmmeter, one way low resistance, reversed test leads and other way high resistance,
One diode plate was positive, other was negative

To check diode you need to remove it from circuit put your meter on ohms or diode check take leads on diode check it then swap the leads and check it again if diode is good it will read one way and not the other way with leads. If diode reads both ways its junk if it wont read at all its junk. The easy to remove from circuit is to unbolt it from the plate.Check the connections on the amp meter they use a isolator to keep it from grounding out i have seen them come loose the amp meter has to have a good connection as it sends power to the battery also check all connections inside of charger.

It's probably just a weak meter. A diode that is slightly out of range can cause the meter to bounce but 90% of the time, it's just a weak stepper motor in the meter. The charger is supposed to get hot. Take a look at the attached photo.
