Default 1985 electric ezgo golf cart

I have a 1985 ezgo golf cart, and we hooked up all the wires and we pushed the gas pedal down and sparks flew near the micro switch. What went wrong?

Check controller and solenoid wiring.

Welcome to BGW!

What type cart is it? Controller or Resistor?

Which of the microswitches were the sparks near? On throttle assembly or F/R assembly?

Which schematic or wiring diagram did you use for a guide to hook up the wires?

@johnnie the diagram that I used was off of a 1986 diagram. That I got off of the Internet. The switch is on the throttle.

Is it a controller cart, fist drawing or a resistor cart, second drawing.

If it is a resistor cart, you might get some sparks in the throttle area.
Not so with a controller cart.

resistor cart will have coils that lool like an extended slinky connected to a board that get very hot when cart is driven, controller based cart will have a big black box with wires coming from motor, solenoid, and throttle input located in the center of your battery pack under a plastic cover....

The only way it could have a speed controller is if somebody has done a resistor to solid state conversion like this http://cartsunlimited.net/Scottyb_s_Conversion_Kit.html

More likely since there are sparks at the speed (selector) device there are bad contact(s) and or worn wiper contact... They do pit and wear uneven over time until one day they cease to make contact and the cart does not go... When they are they bad they look like this pic below.
