This is like re-living Ike's teardown!!!

When you get the frame picked clean, and scrubbed down with the wheel cleaner.. Go over it with a fine tooth comb for any cracked or broken welds.. Ike had several broken welds on the front tubular crossmember, and where the dash support is welded to the front of the rocker panels..

I took everything off the subframe for the rear end, degreased it, knocked the bad rust down with a wire brush and did a few coats of two different types of Rust Converter. I didn't get an after picture of the rust converter, but the stuff from the spray can turned a snowy white. I even let it dry for several days to cure but it stayed white.

The second picture is just a shot of my "work shop". Anyone who know what my garage usually looks like will really appreciate the "mess".

For those who haven't seen what my garage usually looks like - I present Liaho Bar and Grill:

(This is an older set of pictures, the fish tank had to go away to make room for the Margarita Machine and the bigscreen tv moved up stairs to make room for a flat screen that took up less room). I'm as obsessed with being a Parrot Head as I am with working on my buggie!

John - I did find a broken section of aluminum in the front where it goes up to go around the dashboard. Do you have any tips on welding aluminum? I'm guessing aluminum wire in a MIG is whats needed but i'm not sure.

After rust converter, I put several coats of black on the rear axle, brake assembly, and brake drums:

Here's the rear end all painted and put back together with a Jake's 6" lift kit being installed. That's my Dad tightening some lugs on the new wheels before we placed it on the ground. I forgot to clean the dust off the paint from cleaning up the tranny with steel wool before I shot the picture :(

Put the rear end back on the cart (Thank's Dad for the tip on putting some liquid soap on the leaf spring bushings to squeeze them back in place!) I couldn't be more please with how the lift and new tire/wheels look. Can't wait to start on the front!
