Have you cleaned or replaced the fuel pump? It's possible there is some trash floating around inside it that could eventually get between one or both of the valve disc and housing holding it open until choking it draws enough to dislodge it. Or even a bad disc, diaphram or both.

thanks for the suggestion, crash. one of the first things i did was to rebuild the fuel pump, with no change. one of the mechanics (?) that have worked on it replaced the fuel pump, no change. and lord there would have to be tons of crap in the line for this to go on for the last year!

i'll see if i can get it apart without tearing anything up to check it again.

could bad rings cause the 'pulse' for the fuel pump to be too weak to keep the fuel flowing properly?
