Very puzzeling. You said you had 160 lbs of compression? Just for giggles, take the valve cover off and check for valve movement. You can set them to .004 (with the engine cold), sorry ,wish I was there to help.

Thanks for the help...

Ok Took the valve cover off (I can take the intake off in my sleep now) and found the tdc. marked the sheve and block and rotated 1/2 turn counter clockwise. Near the end of that 1/2 turn the intake(one on drivers side) started to move so I rotated 1/2 more turn to get to tdc on the compression stroke. There is no gap on the intake or exhaust. as soon as the intake closes the exhaust opens. I think there should be some delay correct?
If I turn it over the valve movement seems fine.

It is in the upper 40s.

I wanted to ask if i was doing it correctly before I adjusted anything.

Some history ... It has always been very cold natured but if you pulled the choke it would start and run as long as you gave it gas. Lately it seems to be a little off on the power it was running.

That all sounds normal. Do you understand how to set the valve lash to .004"??

Valve lash is the free play between the rocker arm and the
valve stem when the valve is seated and not being moved by
the cam [push rod]. To set them it is handy to have a set
of go-nogo feeler gauges . Push on the push rod side of
the rocker arm and insert the feeler gauge between the
stem and rocker. Adjust until the gauge move but
does not go on to the nogo part. If you don’t have go-nogo
adjust for a tight but movable feeling with the gauge.

I think so... At TDC on the compression stroke loosen the lock nut and adjust the screw out and insert a .004 feeler gauge and tighten the screw up and tighten the locknut.

Is that correct?

One more thing I forgot.. When it first went out if I cover the hole in the intake about 80% it would run but as soon as I moved my hand it would die.

I am going to take the apart one more time and replace all the gaskets. The fuel filter was cruddy. I am also going to drain the tank and refill with fresh.

Any tips on the carb?

I also want to thank everyone for helping.

Get a set of welding tip cleaners for the passages
Support the little legs the the float pin is in and grip the pin with needle nose and tap it out pay attention and take pics as you go clean it well.
Check the needle valve for any wear or damage.

Ok cleaned the carb again and I am an idiot.

Before I did not notice the Pilot screw. I pried the plastic piece off and took it out. There was some black crud on it so I cleaned it off and sprayed out the hole. I put it in till it seated and unscrewed it out 1 1/2 turns and put the plastic back on. The needle valve was good and pliable.

I guess I will try again tomorrow.
