Default touchy throttle

Thanks for the welcome guys. I bought a 93 club car with a FE290 motor for 500.00. The cart had set up for about two years. I removed and flushed the gas tank, changed the lines and did tune up. When I went to start it the starter was the only the working. The motor was turning over with no compression and a knocking sound coming from the head, I assumed the worse. I am not a motor head like a lot of you, but I do know the basic function of engines mostly Chevy small blocks. I removed the valve cover and the push had slipped under the rocker arm.{thanks NO NO NO E-Z-GO!} I read the bi yearly mant. tread and adjusted the valves, the cart fired right up. When you start it seems to go wide open and bump the governor with no in-between. Should I back off the throttle rod or dose this sound like something else? Thanks for your help.

Wildbill, check your carb and make sure the butterfly is still there. You
don't have to take the carb off to do this. Just get hold of the shaft
where the cable connects and lift up on it. If the butterfly is gone, the
shaft will pull out easily until it hits the first screw that holds the butterfly
on.

Big bump, yes the butterfly is there, but I noticed tonight it is worse going down hill than going up. Thanks wildbill

Try this. Take the top off the black control box and take a look at
the accelerator cable. If this cable has been adjusted out too far
you will crank, and run, without much accelerator control. Loosen
the 2 10 mm nuts and move the cable BACK INSIDE the box. See
if this helps.

BIG BUMP, moving the accelerator cable in didn’t work. I tried carb cleaner again and when in maint. mode the engine will just go from start to wide open bounce back down and do it over no mater where I hold the throttle. No slow speed, do you or anybody else have any more ideas? Thanks wildbill

Big Bump, I stand corrected and humbled. I removed the carburetor today to get a better look and you guessed it no throttle valve. Where did it go and should I be looking for it? Will I have to buy a new carb or can you just buy it? Thanks for your help Wildbill

wildbill, I have a bunch of parts books and I have never found just
the butterfly. Best way is just get a new carb and get it over with.
I have had this problem with about 8 carts now. Never did figure
out where the 2 pieces went. They are just thin pieces of brass
and would have to work their way up thru the valves. As you know,
when the motor revs up wide open, it has to suck these things thru
the motor. Does a pretty good job of it too. A disappearing act.

It's good that you have the time and wherewithall to do this. You
could have done a stack while you were at it, and sell them to
others who have this problem, or is gonna have it.
