Default Charging issue

I'm sure it has been answered before but how common is it for the generator to go bad. I have a 2001 TXT with low hours that is not charging and I have read how to check the voltage regulator but I figure if I'm going to go through all the trouble to get to it why not just replace the regulator which I am sure is the problem. Being new to the carts I just would like to say thanks to all for all your help.

If the cart cranks ok the the starter gen itself should be ok.. Never can be 100% sure. You seem to be in the right track with the regulator. Do you have a meter to probe voltages going in and out of the regulator?

Yes. I'm actually heading out to check it right now but would also like to get the part ordered so I can get it replaced asap.

Lets hope the reg is the problem then. Thanks on the cart. I researched a long while before buying mine. Knew nothing of golf carts before buying this one but have worked on every type of thing else..

I ended up taking the generator in to be tested. Tech said it was charging but brushes were wearing inconsistent. I had him rebuild it and now it is charging good but the voltage regulator is also bad. Just received it in mail and going to put it on,hopefully this is the final fix.
