Umax engine lag
When I push the gas pedal it takes a minute for the engine to catch. Most of the time I have to choke the engine and it has a hard time starting on an incline. The engine was rebuilt and runs great once it gets going. It has backfired some.
Any thoughts or ideas as to what the issue may be? |

Re: Umax engine lag
Yes, it was cleaned when the engine was rebuilt. I actually have two umaxes (umaxi?) and I took the carb off of the one that is not running, cleaned it and put it on.
Does it sound like a carb issue? I can clean it again. |

Re: Umax engine lag
Sounds like it's running too lean.

Re: Umax engine lag
Sounds like the main jet is restricted/clogged.

Re: Umax engine lag
Or maybe a leak in the intake spacer (if it has one) or gasket or airbox assembly. They jet them lean any leak will make them run poor. If it pops when you let off at speed that could be an intake leak or idle jet plugged, if it accelerates harder with the choke on just a little then the main more likely needs to be enlarged is dirty or airbox is leaking. I say more likely because it could be any of those but that might help you narrow it down. Main jet dirty may be most likely as Smallblock is more familiar with these than I.

Re: Umax engine lag
Thanks for the replies. I have been traveling a bit and not able to check in.
It does accelerate better with some choke applied. I will take it apart and clean jets and see if that helps then move on to the other suggestions. It did set for a few months or years (not really sure) and did not seem to be taken care of that well. Again, appreciate the help. This is my first cart. |

Re: Umax engine lag
If you can't find the airleak hog out the main jet a little, you can use a torch tip cleaner to file it out. Takes a few tries once large enough it runs nice you are all set.
