Neighborhood Speed Demons
I need some help gang. There are a couple of guys on the Island I live on, that have like 8k in thier EZGOs. While I would love to be able to max mine out, that isn't an option. These guys go flying by and make swerves in front of me, and just roll away. I have a 2001 EZGO TXT, and according to the guys that works on carts around here, the only way to improve performance is 1k motor. To say I am a novice is like saying the Pope is a little catholic, you know what I mean.
Can some of the real experts advise what type of modifications I can make the most economically. I have talked to one guys that has an electric cart (strictly for 1/8 mile), that has been clocked at 60 MPH, but the cost was like 20k for that. I have a basic 36V with a 3IN lift and big tires. I am not looking for a 60 MPH, but as much as I can get. Please help with advice. If you want please email me direct, but keep in mind, I will also need step-by-step instructions. Basically a Golf Cart Performance for Idiots. I can be emailed at jdbeck1@comcast.net. I appreciate any advice you can give. |

That's quite a tall order for anyone here to lead you step by step dbeck907. At the risk of sounding like a total @$$, my advice is to start saving your pennies. Once you have the budget, spend it at your local cart shop and have them do the work. Nothing worse than toasting a brand new $600 controller because you accidentally connected the wrong wire! You can do your research at this site (while you're saving your pennies) to give you an idea of the cost of performance upgrades so you won't get hosed. BTW, what type (specifically) is that $1000 motor they are trying to sell you? Just curious because while there are motors that cost that much and more, generally speaking that is a bit more expensive than I've seen assuming your cart is a Fleet/series TXT and not a PDS. And for that matter, it's expensive even for the sepex. Just my unsolicited $.02. |

Re: Neighborhood Speed Demons
Ok maybe another approach. If you could buy whatever you wanted for my series of golfcart, what would that be and how much would it cost? In doing that how much speed would you then have?

Re: Neighborhood Speed Demons
A new controller $400-$500, could be more depending on what you want, motor $600, new set of batts $750 ish or you could add 2 to the bagwell area for a total of 48 volts. New solenoid $60, 48 volt charger $200-$500. Gearing less than $300. This is of coarse you do all the work. Local cart guy has to eat to and markup on some products isn't that much at all....just depends on how honest the guy is.

Re: Neighborhood Speed Demons
And after you do that, remember you have to be able to STOP too.
Add some cash in there for 4 wheel brakes. The more you mod your cart with voltage increase, the less reliabilty and longevity you will get from the components. You could do all Roady89 suggests and maybe even push it to 72v which would probably give you a 40mph speed demon. |

Unfortunately, some people will choose less expensive ways of power/speed increases or do it in stages and when things happen with a component that is marginal or not rated for the upgrade, frustration sets in. Then all the questions start with failing FNRs, solenoids, controllers etc. If properly planned out, the upgrades can be a very satisfying and trouble free experience. |
