Default 1987 DS rear differential lock

I have an 87 electric club car that I just built into a hunting rig. Converted from a 36v resistor to 48v alltrax using Scotty B’s C54 kit with the admiral 10hp motor.

Took it in the woods/swamp this weekend and it did really well. Only got caught up once and it wouldn’t have gotten stuck if I had the ability to lock the rear diff. I was hoping there is a solution that will allow me to lock the rear diff on command because I don’t want to weld it. We drive it a lot on the roads in our town so Locking it 100% of the time would not work great for me. As far as I can tell the rear end has a club car logo stamped into it. Not sure how to tell which company manufactured it. Anyone have any recommendations on locking mechanisms for an 87 electric cc rear?

If it says Club car on it it’s a Kawasaki axle and not many parts are available for those anymore. There used to be a few places that made a limited slip/locking kit for it but There is no option for a selectable locker as far as I know.
There is a company that makes a locking rear axle for Club car, but last I saw they were in the $1800 range. Can’t remember the name off hand.

Get one already welded together for hunting season, then put yours back on after. I too weighed the pros and cons of this, I just pick my battles with the mud gingerly

Eaton Corp's Detroit Locker division is big into this market. No idea if they have anything for golf carts, but their customer service # is 800-328-3850. Worth a phone call, or they might know another source.

I emailed them. They said they only have a kit for a 1996 club car and up. Any idea what the difference would be for this vs my 1987? My 87 is ten spline, so idk why it wouldn’t work.

might be a matter of room in the motor compartment. just a guess. I have one of those rear ends on my cart and the gear head is a bit taller than a stock axle because of the extra spline coming out of it to connect up your 4 wheel drive if you go that route. could also be the spring shackle connections. i don't know what is or isn't different in that respect from your cart to mine.

that axle is selectable range but not lock up. it's limited slip differential.

if you are gonna run the swamps with it you may still want to think about a winch on it or going for the whole 4 wheel drive experience with it. while it will get you out of a lot of circumstances you wouldn't get out of with out it i have proven you can still get stuck with just a bit too slippery of an uphill that a 4wd would have got you out of.

good luck!

I sure can't think of any reason. The carts are pretty much the same frame-wise. I gotta figure whatever might be different would be an easy fix. As long as the motor mounts up it should work.

All the literature lists them as having a locker. There's a cable mount location that is for the locking mechanism. Are you saying that they do not fully lock even when pulling the lock cable?
