I do think it is a carb problem , one more thing to check is the throttle plate inside the carb ,make sure it's still there, I have seen them come apart and get sucked into the head or exhausted out, the main jet in the picture should be there maybe a couple taps will bring it out, it should fall out once the screw is out, Good luck.

I am sure you have done this, but, just thought I would mention it since you said no maintenance before you started fixing stuff. How old is the gas? Did you put fresh gas in it? Try giving it a shot of starting fluid when you are trying to start with pedal to the floor. If it takes off right away with pedal to floor and shot of starting fluid, it is most likely fuel related. Does it make any difference if it is cold or hot? Does the choke make any difference?

The gas is fresh.

I took the carb back apart. The throttle plate is there.

But! The main jet, #6 in the picture, is missing!

I assume this is the problem but why would it run at all?

I also assume I need to replace the carb unless I can just buy that jet.

Thanks for the help. Any thoughts or have you seen this before? It looks like the screw holding it in had been taken out before because the screwdriver slot was chewed up.

Thanks.

Wow! Now it really makes you think what the heck was going through the guys head that originally took that carb apart. You know, he gets it all back together and has extra parts... I know all the jokes about extra parts, but, come on, this is a carb, you just don't have "extra parts" on a carb rebuild! At least not if you want it to run right when your done!

Just a note... per my Illustrated parts manual:

#6 = Main nozzle
#7 = Altitude jet (#82 = 0 to 3000 feet above sea level)

I don't know much about carbs but #6 was missing and #7 was there. I assumed #7 was just a screw to hold the jet in.

So, yes the screw was there.

When I took it apart the first time, I am not sure how far the screw was in but when I put it together, I tightened it completelty. I think this may have cut the flow completely form that tube.

I still have no idea why this it would allow it to run if I slowly depressed the throttle and then brought it to full throttle but not when I pressed the throttle quickly.

Anyway, I ordered the high-performance jets because they were the only ones I could find by themselves. I hope they work or I will have to buy a new carb.
