Dead transaxle
For few days I have noticed some noise coming from the rear transaxle. Then today it finally decided to die on me. The input shaft bearing is completely shattered. I have taken the transaxle out and have it up on my workbench. I've pulled it apart as far as I can go with it. The forward and reverse gear is still together all the other parts are in a cardboard box. The bearing for the input shaft fell apart in my hands I have all the parts. The speed governor is completely torn apart also and was in pieces in the bottom of the aluminum casing. My question is, would it be cheaper to rebuild this box, and where can I find parts. Most of the parts suppliers online seem to have lots of lift kits Tuneup kits wheels and bling bling. Not a lot of Break down of engine and transaxle parts. or would it be cheaper for me to just try to find a complete transaxle. By the way it is a 1996 carryall 2. I have it down to the point where the input shaft housing, and that's small Aluminum housing in between the two bodies. I can't tear down any more than that because of the forward and reverse gear. Going through to the other aluminum housing. I'm not sure if this is clear, but anyone who's worked on should know what I'm talking about If anyone has any tips on how to tear this down the rest of the way I would like to wash all the parts off before trying to reassemble it. Thank you in advance for any help anyone can give me. Also if I need to I can send pictures.

Re: Dead transaxle
After looking everything over. I believe the main problem is the bearing to the input shaft. I can't see any excessive wear broken teeth etc. the only other problem that I see is the little shaft that's selects the foward and reverse is a bit sloppy, may explain why was having trouble going from forward to reverse. I now realize the transmission is split into two sections to both have to have oil in them. The larger section was okay with oil, the small section up by the input shaft and shifter had run low on oil. That's what I believe the bearings seized up and finally shattered. My question is, is there a oil seal in between the two halves of the transmission body. And if so how do you take the foreign reverse gear apart to replace it I would hate to put everything back together and have it leak there in the very middle of that small aluminum housing in between the two big housings. Also what is the WTB forum.

Re: Dead transaxle
Thanks for all the info, but I still might try to rebuild this box. It looks like if I can remove the last roller bearing. I can take the forward and reverse gear out and be able to clean everything and then all I'll need is one roller bearing a set of gaskets. Everything else looks good. Again, my only concern is the two halves of the transmission box seemed to have separate oiling systems, and I'm afraid there must be a oil seal in between the two halves of the case in which unless I completely disassemble it. I will be able to get to to replace and I would hate to put it all back together just to have it leak. but again, thanks for the quick replies. I didn't see much on transaxle's in the use parts for sale section, but I'll keep on looking in case anyone.
