Default Difference in compression numbers, what does it mean

Been having an issue with my 02 TXT. I can have it floored and it won’t go until I feather the choke. Even after driving around for awhile, when I go from a stop I have to feather the choke.

Tested compression last night, after running it for a couple minutes. I got 110 on the drivers side and 150 on the other side. i’m not an expert but I don’t think they should be that different, is this just a simple seal replacement or more to it.

Adjust your valves. Then check again. Always check compression on a cold engine. And adjust the valves on a cold engine as well. On a good engine I’d expect to see compression in the 165-170 range. 150 is a little low but still it’ll still run fine and be okay.

Once they’re adjusted (.004 for all of them) look at the threads exposed above the lock nut for the adjuster. If there’s noticeably more threads showing on the 2 intake valves (the 2 in the middle) then the valves are worn out and sinking into the head and will need to be replaced.

If they’re all pretty even then just run it, it should be fine.

Either way it will generally bring compression way up on both cylinders. If the valves aren’t sunk you’ll be good for quite a while. If they are sunk it will run better for a little bit but won’t last long before they sink further and get way out of adjustment and lose compression again.

So valve adjustment first. Got it.

Would this be what is causing me having to play with the choke every time I take off?

Valve lash out of spec will cause a lot of various drivability problems. The valves control how much air enters and exits the engine, and when. When the lash is out of adjustment these ratios are no longer correct. Also if they’re too tight, then they’re not necessarily being held “open” (though eventually this can and will happen if not adjusted periodically) but in your case with low compression, they’re just not being allowed to close or seat “tight” enough and compression can leak past the valve.

99.9% of the time on these motors when you have one cylinder that’s way low and one that’s just “kinda” low it’s the valves. When rings and cylinders wear they generally tend to do it pretty evenly and they’ll both be low.

So I went through and gapped each one to .004 and there was no change in compression on drivers side it was still 125 (I rechecked on a cold engine) and the passenger side increased to about 163.

I put a little oil in the spark plug hole and it jumped to 170 on drivers side.

The 2 valves in the middle has maybe one extra thread showing.

Sounds like rings and a hone then. I would be inclined to fit new inlet valves too for the extra cost rather than strip down again later. Tear it down and see what they look like!

Ok. Gonna have to clear some space and start the tear down. Well get back here with my findings. Thanks guys.
