Help with first gas cart
Ok, So I've had tons of electric carts, and just got my first gas cart for cheap today. I don't know a lot about them, so I hope this thing is fixable.
It's a 1990 Marathon. Originally a 4 cycle engine but someone "converted" it to 2 cycle and disabled the oil injection so it takes 50:1? Is that a normal thing to do? The cart was apparently running a few months ago, after the previous owner replaced the carburetor and fuel pump. When I got it, it was ripped apart in pieces. The carburetor was removed, and the fuel pump was removed and laying in the glove box. The compression is good (125 PSI) and it cranks off the battery and I get a spark at the spark plug. If I pour some 50:1 in the carburetor, it will run for a few seconds. I think I must have a problem with hooking up the fuel pump and connecting the lines to the gas tank. Does anyone have a diagram for where the fuel pump goes in the line and how it's hooked up? Also how the carburetor linkage attaches? Thanks in advance, Luke L. |

Re: Help with first gas cart
Luke I'm pretty sure the 1990 Marathon came from the factory with a 2 cycle engine.A lot of people do eliminate the factory oil injection and just premix gas in the tank @ 128-1 ratio (1 oz of oil to 1 gallon of gas). Here's a factory manual that will help on the linkages etc....... http://www.eastcoastcarts.com/media/...rts_manual.pdf

Re: Help with first gas cart
Thank you! I have a couple more questions- the first one's silly.
Where in the world does that round fuel pump mount? And will it run if there's a hole in the top of the gas tank? Thank you, Luke |

Re: Help with first gas cart
Look on page 122 of the manual for pic of the fuel pump (it mounts to the rear of the crankcase).Yes it should run with a hole in the top of the gas tank but be careful that it don't slosh fuel out on the exhaust and cause a fire.

Re: Help with first gas cart
Thank you. I will try to assemble it more tomorrow. I think I'll get that 50:1 out of there before I try it too.

Re: Help with first gas cart
I got it together and am having some issues getting it to run. It will run ok at 3/4 to full choke only, and even then it isn't very smooth. I am using the correct gas mixture. What do I need to change?

Re: Help with first gas cart
Luke hopefully somebody with more 2 cycle knowledge will chime in shortly.I do know that good completely intact crank seals are a must on the 2 strokers, also did you completely disassemble & clean the carb?

Re: Help with first gas cart
You need to get the right fuel pump.
The electric pump is over powering the float valve. |
