Re: 350 with a 295 head? anyone have experence with one
OK, i found the video, but i dont know how to embed it so just follow the link. Its old and low res but will give you an idea of the power it has. I estimated this to be around 18/20 HP compared to 9 for the 295 and 11 for the 350 standard set ups.

Re: 350 with a 295 head? anyone have experence with one
Thanks cartmaster.
if I understand this correctly? I could just mill the 350 head and have the same results and wont have to come up with a 295 head. I know from my rebuild kit the valves are the same. I just need to find out how much to take off without having issues! |

You will find the chamber shape is better in the 295 head for combustion, but shaving the 350 head may well get similar results, never tried it but hey! go for it.
I thought you had a 295 engine already, just try the head from that on the 350 |

Re: 350 with a 295 head? anyone have experence with one
I do have a 295, but I done a total rebuild on it last summer so I don't want to use it as a parts engine.
new rods, pistons, valves, guides, oil pump and all 5 bearings and manual oil pressure gauge/sending unit. maybe for sale later if I get this 350 |

Re: 350 with a 295 head? anyone have experence with one
I studied this subject long and hard before making the choice to go with the VC 625. Both Robin engines are good powerplants but like others of their generation a bit underpowered for non-golf applications. The information I gathered on the subject was that a minor milling of the head gave a little more compression, maybe enough to feel with seat of the pants, but it seemed like more money than the return. We are talking very incremental increases. The 295 head probably does more than incremental but that is a lot of compression increase. Definitely expect it would require premium fuel. The claim for HP numbers seem pretty optimistic for a 4,000 rpm engine. I believe it makes some nice power but the plain bearing engine is getting stressed a lot more than it was designed for. Not to dissuade you from doing it, but I would get the 350 rebuilt by someone who does an excellent job, add the short belt, and judge if you want to press forward with modifications. When you are used to a worn out 9HP engine a new 11HP engine will feel a lot better. If not, you should have gone for a clone in the first place.

As far as my engine, I done a total rebuild last summer. These engines are simple to rebuild. if you do it right is about $450, but that's replacing a lot of parts the rebuilders do not. |

Re: 350 with a 295 head? anyone have experence with one
Then you are in a good position to forge ahead rebuilding the 350. My buddy and I have a 350 sitting in my pole barn. He is waiting to get it rebuilt locally and swap it into his 94 Marathon. We will keep it stock except for a shorter belt. Right now he has worn out 20" tires that will be replaced with 22" this spring too. The 295 will get sold after the swap to help finance the rebuild. Neither he nor I are up to rebuilding one ourselves.
