86 Marathon muffler, any experience?
I have a thread (below) about repacking my muffler on my 86 Marathon but as I look closer, I am baffled with what I see and thought a thread to talk about this might be helpful. I know some of you guys have dissected this muffler and know exactly what is in it and why.
I took it to a body shop guy who does some welding for me and we were really surprised to see the construction of this muffler. It has a thin skin wrapping it, as if the muffler were placed in a big tin can, and then a plate welded to that skin which has the mounting brackets. The skin is cracked in more places than can be welded. Is it the actual muffler which we are seeing under the thin skin and if I grind away the welds and unwrap the thin skin, will I be looking at the actual muffler? Why is that the skin there? If I cleaned all the cracks and had him weld everything together (skin to muffler) tightly into one piece, would it work? Why in Gods name would they attach the engine directly to the muffler and the muffler directly to the frame? There is no way it won't eventually shake apart Muffler.jpg http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-e...g-muffler.html |
