86 Marathon Driven Clutch Spring?
Howdy all! Since it's raining up here on the North coast of Ohio I figured it'd be a good day to do some work in the garage... somewhere along the line I got distracted and instead of cleaning up my workbench I found myself trying to tear apart the driven clutch on my Marathon in hopes of removing a broken spring and searching for a replacement.
And that's where I run into problems. I have the service manual and have no problems removing it but I am having one heck of a time locating a replacement spring. Almost every website and auction I can find for a spring, alone, is for the 89 and up models. After doing some research here I learned that the driven clutch in the later gas models switched to a different spline pattern amongst other things. But I have found no reference to the driven clutch springs. Did those remain the same? Is there a spring out there that crosses the generations and would be a good fit? There are a few auctions and sales out there on the interwebs that list a spring but when the seller is asked if it would fit the early to mid 80's Marathons... they don't have any answers. I don't want to spend the time and money to order one as an experiment only to find that it doesn't fit. Does anyone have any suggestions or would you be able to point me in the right direction? |

Re: 86 Marathon Driven Clutch Spring?
Well, you have a couple options that I know of. You could buy a new driven clutch......
Or.. When I was looking for a stronger spring in my drive clutch I was told to measure the one I have and go from there, for you wanting to replace the spring with the same one should be easier. To measure it they'll want the diameter of the wire so you'll need to mic it, also the overall inside and outside diameters and the length. Also the color is very important.... Seems like I ended up contacting the Comet clutch company but don't remember for sure, Perhaps search for snowmobile clutches. It's quite common to 'tune' those with different springs....Good Luck |
