Kawasaki 400 low compression problem
Hello bgw, got my dad's ezgo gas cart at my house now. This thing turns over good and has fire. I borrowed a compression tester and I have 30# showing. Also took the rocker arms loose so the valves wouldn't open and close and I still only get 33#. Anyone have any experience with this Kawasaki engine???

Re: Kawasaki 400 low compression problem
Put a tablespoon or so of oil in the spark plug hole and check the compression again. If it comes up then you can plan to tear down and rebuild. If no change then I'd say you either have a bad compression gauge or a problem with the valves or head. Or possibly head gasket but youd probabl notice that.

Re: Kawasaki 400 low compression problem
Removing a rocker off won't tell you much..
If you aren't pulling any air in thru the closed valve, there's nothing to compress.. |

Re: Kawasaki 400 low compression problem
Ok I actually got a manual and tore this thing apart. Looks pretty simple. I am confused about the ring gap. I stick the new ones in the cylinder and check the gap they say to, but seems like the gap is a lil bigger than my feeler gauge. The gap looks very small to me though. Are rings correct size or do you actually have to file them???

Re: Kawasaki 400 low compression problem
You need to put the ring in flat, about an inch down from the top of the cylinder. Press it in with the piston to make it square. The book will give you a range. Maybe something like .008"- .014" (I just made up those numbers) You really want the .008, but don't make the gap any bigger than the .014".
Besides youtube videos, this page explains it to you. http://blog.wiseco.com/how-to-file-f...l-piston-rings |
