Re: 1991 GXT800 all kinds of problems
Sure enough.
Good catch on the missing diamond plate too. I guess this thing has been frankensteined together. I'll have to keep my eye out for the correct front end. it would look way better with matching diamond plate. |

Re: 1991 GXT800 all kinds of problems
Some bad news on this old beast today. I installed the new carb today and still couldn't get it to fire up. I went and picked up a compression tester and found 60 in one side and 65 in the other.
Looks like pistons and rings are in my near future unfortunately. Also, I mentioned that this thing has an electric fuel pump. With it on, the carb is actively pumping fuel out of the vacuum lines and overflowing. Too much pressure? are these things just not meant to have an electronic pump? |

Re: 1991 GXT800 all kinds of problems
Made some progress over the last couple of weeks, the engine is out, clean, honed and awaiting the last couple of parts before it goes back together.
In the meantime, I tore it down to a clean firewall, pressure washed, power brushed out any rust and gave it two coats of rust barrier. Surprisingly little damage and only a bit of surface rust under the tank and battery thanks to the dry mountain air up here. Still plenty of cleaning to do on the frame tubes and rear-end while I wait for engine parts. If anybody has pictures of the proper throttle and shifting cable routes I'd appreciate a look. |

Re: 1991 GXT800 all kinds of problems
It was lifted and had the coilovers when I bought it. I wish they had put as much effort into the front, it's sitting a little crooked and the shocks are shot.
