96 club car little to no power in reverse

I printed a diagram to trace the wires and got stumped right away. On the motor it has
S1 A1 side by side at the top of the motor.
S2 A2 side by side at the side of the motor.
The only wiring diagram I could find showed the motor with 4 terminals in a row.
I tried hooking 2 aligator clips across the red and green at the bottom like the sketch and got sparks?? What did I do wrong.??

Thanks everyone I got it fixed. I was using the wrong gage wire.That is why it burned up on me . I took the green wire off the battery and put it with the red wire on the battery. I now have full powwer in reverse. What a difference. Will this be ok or are there problems down the road with this set up.

I dont think it will hurt anything they just put it on 18 volts so they dont go so fast in reverse.Its a safety issue.
