Default Froward-Reverse microswitch

1983 Club Car 36volt old style F-R switch. I was cleaning all the connections no the switch and wire ends. after hooking back up it fried the micro switch. got a new one, 2 just in case. I checked and rechecked all connections with wire diagram. Tried it again and wires got hot but turned key off before it fried tis one. I cleaned the F-R switch with contact cleaner. Did I short the F-R switch or did I miss a wire somewhere? there are't that many to check and trace. Any ideas what I did wrong or the cause? I'm loosin it on this one.
