Re: 2003 series cart build
A stock series controller (Curtis 1206) passes a maximum of 275A, but a DC electric motor can only draw more than 275A at the lower end of its RPM spectrum. (Laws of physics - the faster the armature spins, the fewer amps the motor can draw.) In other words, once the motor is spinning faster than the highest RPM at which it can draw 275A, it doesn't matter how many amps the controller is capable of passing. Basically, a controller with a greater throughput than a stock controller has will provide greater acceleration from a standstill and more pulling power at low speeds, but the top speed will remain the same.
On the other hand, the controller with the higher throughput won't be working as hard and will last longer when running oversized tires and carrying heavier loads. Heat kills electronics and higher amp controllers have greater heat dissipation capabilities, but stock 275A controllers that have been "upgraded" to 300A or 350A still have stock heat dissipation capabilities, so they tend to fall into the fun while they last category. |
