I have been battling this same condition on my 91. Took the S/G off and it seemed to run fine put it back on the engine and WEAK. I removed it yesterday after I let the smoke out of it and noticed one of the mounting holes is egg shaped. Thinking possibly that it wasn't aligned properly and it was in a bind.

This was exactly what was wrong with mine also - took about an hour from start to finish - parts were $10 - works 100% better!
