Battery possessed by evil spirits
Strange new battery issue. 12v x4, about 5 years old, in 48v Precedent. Noticed big drop in power last week, no time to check voltage, put on charger all week, didn't use cart.
Yesterday checked voltage after full charge - one battery was only 9.6v, others all 12.x volts, whole pack measured 46.7. Drove it a little while, just 5 minutes. Today, after overnight charge ALL batteries measured 12.x volts and pak measured 50.x volts! Drove it for few mminutes, plenty of power, and all 4 still measure 12.x and pak 49.x volts. What's up? Did the battery faries come visit last night or what? I was sure I had a dead cell. Why would it only read 9.6v after a full charge and then go back to a normal 12.x charge? |

Re: Battery possessed by evil spirits
Give it some rest time off the charge; least 12 hours and check again.... Try this over the course of several days you may find the battery falling again. Turns out my cart was sold to me with 3 questionable batteries that while they would accept charge they would weaken quickly under use and would drop voltage over the course of several days....
Keep in mind too that 49.9 volts is only 80 % state of charge and at 48.4 volts your battery is all but DEAD so that .x that your leaving out means quite a lot when measuring battery SOC.... |

Perhaps you need to call an electrocist and have some sort of electrocism?

Re: Battery possessed by evil spirits
I figured they were on their last legs, just struck me odd one would go from dead as a doornail 9.6 back to 12.6 overnight.

Re: Battery possessed by evil spirits
not strange ... got a cart that shows 38.3 volts after charge ( and rest ).. then goes to 34v after 50 feet ... .. let it rest and it shows 37.5 v .. another 50 feet and it shows 32v .. rest and 34v ... your batteries are dead replace them

Re: Battery possessed by evil spirits
This is the part about batteries that most people don't understand...just because they accept a charge and have voltage doesn't mean they are good batteries. Personally I used a 500amp carbon pile load tester to test batteries to see if they will live or die. There are other ways but this has always worked for me. Most battery supply companies will load test your batteries for you...but...that means removal from the cart and hauling them somewhere for a charge and test. But it is one sure way to make a good decision about your batteries. The other common mistake is NOT replacing all the batteries in a pack. It really is the right thing to do in the long run.

Re: Battery possessed by evil spirits
Agree, shopping for new batts now. Just curious why one would show a 9.6v after a full charge (essentially dead) then next time show a 12.3 or 12.4 after a full charge.
By the way, drove the cart around on Sunday, the day the "miracle" battery came back to life and the charge did not drop that much after 1/2 our or so driving. I wrote another post about Exide batteries and didn't get many comments. Feel free to post experience with the new 8v 118's by Exide? |

Re: Battery possessed by evil spirits
One possible cause for the drop and recovery of the battery voltage is the cells in the battery are connected with strips one to the other. One of the strips may have cracked and given false readings. Just a though.

Re: Battery possessed by evil spirits
When a 12v battery drops a cell it basically becomes a 10v battery...that can be because of a loose connection...a partial broken connection...or a loose pos. plate that shorts out and then moves again and stops shorting...the last one sounds like your issue. You can test the theory by hitting the battery with a rubber mallet while you have your meter attached and observing to see if you can cause it to change voltage...be aware a shorted cell issue can be dangerous and in some cases cause a battery to blow up if there is a lot of hydrogen gas and the short causes an internal spark. Be aware.
