ChangLi Cheap Chinese Car Upgrade Journey
New to the forum, but thought I'd bring everyone along on my cheap Chinese car upgrade. Bought this thing during Covid as a toy and have wanted to upgrade it for the last year. It's a lot of fun, but not nearly enough speed or power. I couldn't find anyone that has posted a journey of mods/upgrades to the extent that I want to, so let's figure it out!
I'll do my best to walk through the rationale and process. Thanks for coming along! |

Re: ChangLi Cheap Chinese Car Upgrade Journey
I began by researching upgrading the motor. To be honest, the wiring is a rat's nest and the whole drivetrain is pathetic. I looked into trying to adapt a golf cart motor, but it was going to be quite a bit of screwing around. As of right now, I've decided to buy an old EZ-GO TXT as a donor to swap the entire back axle. This will open up a whole ton of upgrade options and give me a more reliable car.
Here is the donor cart. It looked decent, but turned out to have been wrecked pretty hard at some point in its' life. The rear axle assembly and batteries were in good shape, which is ultimately what matters. |

I would also consider swapping out the pedal box. Not sure how you can program a new controller to the ChangLi pedal.

Agreed. I am planning on pulling the pedals over as well.

Re: ChangLi Cheap Chinese Car Upgrade Journey
Had some time to work on the ChangLi this week. Stripped it all down and cut off a bunch of steel. Was planning to use the leaf springs from the donor golf cart, but wasn't liking the way it was laying out, so elected to fabricate a triangulated 4-link suspension. Mounted the long-travel lift kit up to it (with only a couple mods) and got the whole chassis rolling. Wheel spacers haven't arrived yet. Next steps are steering, brakes and throttle. Pretty sure I'm going to go lithium with the Navitas AC setup. Open to recommendations on the battery.
