measuring cylinder bore
can a vernier caliper be used to measure the cylinder bore since I do not have a bore gauge. I am trying to find out if the cylinder is still usable with oversized piston.

Re: measuring cylinder bore
i don't think so. you can do what i did and just get a piston kit, then check the clearance. after deglazing the bore. if you have more than .007 cleance, using feeler gauges, send the kit back and order the whole top end kit. on an 83, i bet you will need it. this 89 had 120 psi before break in just using the new piston and rings. it was on the ragged edge of .007.

Re: measuring cylinder bore
You can use two pins or nails side by side held with pliers to measure the bore but you will need to measure four places and if you will be doing this type of work often a bore gauge kit might be in order.

Re: measuring cylinder bore
you most definately need a bore gauge to measure if there is wear where the piston rings actually travel. a vernier will only measure at the top of the bore which is probably unaffected by the piston ring.i think most auto parts stores will rent those types of tools.

Re: measuring cylinder bore
It really doesn't matter what you use to measure it the answer is that it is not usable with an oversized piston. The bore will have worn in a non concentric pattern as there will have been blowby in one or more places. If you really want to use that cylinder (instead of buying a top end replacement kit) then you are going to have to bore it at +25 or +50 and use the appropriate piston. Using a new piston in an old bore is a certain recipe for insanity.

Re: measuring cylinder bore
Or as the farmers do around here. Bore it out and place a sleeve in it. You can take it back to factory specs. I did a Chevy 350 engine that had a hole in the water jacket. Worked like a charm.
