Re: Converting 85 DS to Solid State
8/6v will store more amperage than 6/8v. They also weigh 150 pounds more. So you carry more amperage but it takes more power to move .... lets not hijack this build.
If you want to open a discussion on 6/8v versus 8/6v please start your own thread. |

Re: Converting 85 DS to Solid State
Looking Good! I'm planning on doing my 93 Resistor the same way! Post lots of pictures:)
Why did you chose to get a new motor also, just out of curiosity..... |

Re: Converting 85 DS to Solid State
I've got many more pics I will post soon. Finished making wires and wired charger up also. Plugged it up and topped them off while I had to go out of town.
Back Thursday and will post all the pics and hopefully will be driving it Friday. I did a new motor because my next project will be a lift and bigger tires. I also wanted to launch my small boat with it. Plus, I paid $50 for the cart. So I had some room to spend on upgrades. |

Re: Converting 85 DS to Solid State
Looks good man, and hope you post those pics soon I have a 93 resistor I hope to convert myself. The way they say it wakes up the 36 V motor makes me want to do it now. One of these days though....

Re: Converting 85 DS to Solid State
Here are a few more pics:
The first is a diagram Scotty emailed me. I didn't have it when I did initial wiring, so I burned up my diode because I installed it backwards. Then the short burned up my micro switch on the back of my throttle potentiometer. So I took off the diode and bypassed the switch for now. So the diagram is very important if you are doing this conversion - don't mount the diode backwards! On grass, it spins the wheels so fast I have to TRY and start slow just to get some traction! It really is bad a$$. Top end is probably around 20mph. In the second picture, I riveted in a cross member so I could attach my controller. Worked out well. I walso mounted my solenoid on the wheel wale. I have finished making all my cables and re-positioned the batteries to keep my jumpers the shortest length possible. I will post a pic of that later. I bought 6 new Interstate heavy duty 8 volts for $821. A little pricey, but a good battery and a local vendor. More pics to come. |

All done now. My little screw up only cost me $26. Whew. Don't mind those kinds!

Re: Converting 85 DS to Solid State
First photo - all my wires complete. I kept them all away from my service caps on the batteries. Second photo is my new FNR switch, and my wired and fused charger plug. Third photo is my new potentiometer, fourth is my new solenoid, and lastly, a picture of the cart. It went 24mph last night on gps on a long straight road.
Budget for upgrade: $1750 for 48v charger, solenoid, FNR, Alltrax controller, new throttle conversion, and new D&D 9.5 horse elec motor. $90 for new cables and ends. $820 for all new 8v batteries. So a little over $2600. And I paid $50 for the cart. Next is an AllSport Supersport lift, tires and wheels, and some custom fiberglass work and paint. Probably take a little break before all that and enjoy it. |

Re: Converting 85 DS to Solid State
Nice results! That's as fast as my 48v EZ-Go!
One comment: The wires from the charge receptacle to the main pack terminals look small to me. I'm thinking a heavier gauge is called for considering the charger can deliver 20 amps at initial startup. |
