Isn't there a rule of thumb that all your grounds come off the same pole? So you would use your last two batteries in your parallel setup?

I know if you run a trolling motor (36v) in a boat and use your starting battery in that setup, then your starting battery must share the same ground pole the trolling motor uses.

Maybe someone here can be more specific.

On a vehicle with a frame ground yes, in the golf cart world you can use any two batteries you wish.

I agree. Most voltage converters are not designed to carry that kind of load a winch would require. If you did buy a converter that would handle a load like that, it would "Probably" be expensive.

I would not think that you will be using a winch that much to begin with so just hooking to two batteries should work fine.
