Ezgo lower tie rod hits springs
I recently extended my front leaf springs (2001 ezgo txt) to get more clearance when turning with my 23's. When I did this I had to add leaf wedges to fix the angle on the axle. Now that that is fixed i have a new issue. My lower tie rod now hits on the leaf springs and no longer fits. I need it to be about 3" lower to clear (had to add a lot of wedges). Does anyone make longer bolts or some type of extension kit?

Re: Ezgo lower tie rod hits springs
Does anyone know how to fix this, or if there is some type of extension made for the tie rod bolts? Maybe a different tie rod from another yr and model might fit?

Re: Ezgo lower tie rod hits springs
Why the shims in the springs/what was the reason??
I think that the shims are turning the axle up, and there for making the steering rod hit the springs, if the shims were not in there the steering rod would not hit the spring |

Re: Ezgo lower tie rod hits springs
You are correct. The shims are what caused the problem. I put them in because my 23" wheels rubbed on the fenders after I installed 2" wheel spacers for stability. On another thread, I was advised to replace my front springs with 96' springs which are 3" longer. This pushed out my front end and allowed for clearance with the fenders. However, this in turn changed the pitch of my axle so I added in 20 degrees of shims. The axle is now fixed, but the tie rod rubs on the leaf springs. Suggestions?

Re: Ezgo lower tie rod hits springs
when you get a lift kit for a cart, they have a riser that bolts to the spindle to raise the steering arm up away from the springs maybe they will work for this problem, not sure because i've never seen anybody put shims in there like that
See the two brackets in the top left and right corner of the pic, this is what might fix it for you, (might) |

Re: Ezgo lower tie rod hits springs
Thanks, I will see if I can find just the risers (without the kit). Thanks!

Re: Ezgo lower tie rod hits springs
its the tappered shank that makes the tie rod work, so extending the bolt would only give you a long bolt hanging down and not move the tie rod at all. you could bend the tie rod but that would make allingement a b!tch, you would have to remove the end link to make adjustments. You may want to try to source it outside the CG world. maybe a 4x4 or a car end link would work for you. all you really need to do is match your tapper. I can assure you that ezgo does not make these parts they buy them from some one so the tapper is probably standard.
good luck. take it to autozone and see what they have Last edited by TheWiltz; 05-11-2012 at 09:55 AM.. Reason: my english teachers did a bad job :) |
