Default 48 volt EZ Go Battery Wiring Issue

Aloha,

New to the forum. I just recently bought a 48v Ez-Go Shuttle 6 2009. I painted it, lifted it and added rims and tires. I replaced the solenoid and just bought all new batteries. When I was hooking up all the batteries in series I accidentally (stupid me) hooked up all 8 batteries in series (with the positive and negative cables for the cart hooked up). The cart was in "tow" mode but once I connected all batteries, yes I connected every single one in series creating a circuit its started sparking and arch welded and melted one of the batteries cables until it stopped sparking and flashing lol. How much damage could I have caused? It was connected for about 5-10 seconds and the cart was in "tow" mode. I don't see any other melted wiring... Now I've hooked it up correctly, the battery meter on the dash works but the cart doesn't run. (It never ran before as the solenoid and previous batteries were bad). I also added a stereo and voltage reducer, could those be damaged? The stereo doesn't work, I haven't pulled it out to check the fuse yet. I am going to buy a voltage meter tomorrow. Any suggestions on what to check next?

Mahalo,

if you melted the post on one of your batteries.. well..

best thing to do first is bust out the multimeter and see if you have 48v.

if not, narrow it down to which batteries aren't giving proper voltage. they're likely toast.

The battery post wasn't melted just the battery cable. The battery meter shows full charge, 48 volts I am assuming...

battery's a start. now on to everything it leads to.

follow and check for voltage accordingly.

The bar graph type meter is going to show full almost regardless of the battery pack voltage because it resets to full each time the charger is used. Get yourself a digital battery meter and keep your new (expensive) batteries in perfect condition.

I'm not clear on why the cable end sparked and melted. The batteries do connect in series, that was correct. A small spark would be normal as the filter capacitors draw precharge juice immediately but a melted cable indicates a short or incorrect wiring.

Are you saying that you hooked them up in a complete circuit? Was this a dead short with no load?

I'm envisioning the batteries in a loop to themselves.

When I read your comment and reread the OP's statement I think you may be correct as just hooking the batteries up "correctly" absolutely will not cause a battery or cable to impersonate a Roman Candle....

But also considering that according to the OP's statement he has never seen the cart run and thus there may still be something wrong beyond the solenoid and batteries as he believes...

Looping the series pack back into itself (main positive to main negative ) would be rather spectacular.

So your mains were hooked up and you put all the batteries in series and it acred? Like Scotty said , a small one is normal but continuous...something is wrong. Was the main positive touching the main negative like Scotty said...did you connect the main positive to the main negative somehow?

Controller in tow mode takes it out and protects it right?
