In this case, discrete is either on or off, while analog can be anywhere from zero to full pack voltage.

I don't think the charger behaves any differently if the voltage is slightly higher inside the charger, rather than in a dirty charger plug connected to a dirty contact. It either starts charging or it doesn't, correct?

I guess it can possibly affect when the charger thinks it's finished, which is probably more accurate without the third wire, which my DPI doesn't have.

I think this is what he's talking about. Not sure what difference it makes here.

That connection has nothing to do with voltage level or accuracy, it is just a safety feature that ensures there will be no current flowing that could potentially cause a spark if the plug is removed while the charger is still running.

The original location allows the charger to turn OFF while the positive and negative pins are still making contact with the receptacle.

It also ensures the charger pins are making contact first before the charger turns ON while inserting the plug.

So back to the last question posed:

"Is this a permanent solution"

My vote is "yes".

Yes, many chargers sense the battery pack voltage entirely within the charger.

Either way, I also vote "yes" it could be a permanent solution.

And Sergio made some good points that may have been the engineer's angle too.

You are correct that the two aren't exactly the same in the real world, but they are the same electrically, which is ideal and doesn't exist "in the wild".
