Default Yamaha G16 Ignition coil or fuel

My ignition coil on a '97 G16 suddenly failed. No spark, disconnected throttle ground lead to coil and no spark, no start.

OEM ignition coils start about $125 and Chinese universal coils at $15. Ordered the $15 version and it does produce spark but . . . the laminated core is about 1/8" thinner than OEM and mounting holes place the coil to flywheel gap far outside OEM specs.

It will begrudgingly start but seems to have little power. There is no timing adjustment that I can see with a rigidly mounted coil.

Obviously, I had to disturb the carburetor to get the air filter to carb duct out of the way but did nothing to disturb the internal carburetor function. I did replace all of the 20 year old fuel hose.

Based on spark plug appearance after maybe a half hour running I would say it is running lean rather than rich.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

OEM is not so expensive: http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/ya...640-00-00.html

Be ready to order one... soon or (not too much) later Myself, I would not wait and solve the trouble for good...

Well, at least the coil is only $15 in the trash. Hey, lesson learned. If the cart ran fine before the "no spark" situation, but runs crummy now with Cheap China coil (that is well known in Yamaha circles to be of poor quality), I'm looking squarely at that coil. Might as well get all 3 intake gaskets when you change the coil.

Thanks guys!

I will add the gaskets. Anyone got the part numbers? I have not figured out how to effectively search the Boat.net catalog

Anything else worthy of replacement while everything is apart?
