Re: Motor types
Armature terminals will be the two terminals closest to the end, normally labeled A1 and A2. These connect to the brushes. The brushes provide power to the rotor (the part of the motor that turns) through the commutator (end of the rotor that contacts with the brushes).
When brushes wear out or become stuck, they do not make good contact with commutator. In this case, the current has to 'jump' (arc) from the brushes to commutator. When electricity arcs, it creates heat (think welding machine). If the A terminal is the one that melted, you likely have worn out or stuck brushes. |

Re: Motor types
You've identified your drive system as a DCS, so you have a sepex motor and the field is excited separately from the armature and the max field amps is roughly 1/10 the max amps of the armature. Of course, less than 30A is enough to get a dirty or loose terminal hot enough to melt an insulator, but far less likely than the 300A flowing through the armature terminals.
The armature terminals pass through the motor's aluminum end cap while the field terminals pass through the motors painted case. |
