For small 12v relays like the ones typically seen on automobiles use a 1 amp diode.

For larger solenoids like the ones used in golf cart use a 3 amp diode.


The diode side with a "stripe" is wired towards the positive activation wire.

That way the diode is "reversed biased" so it does not conduct while the coil is energized.

When the controlling device deactivates the relay/solenoid, there will be an induced current flowing in a reverse path through the diode so it will conduct and prevent the voltage from building up at the switching device and possible damaging the device.

A 100v rated diode is enough for a 12v system, I usually buy the 1000v or 400v diodes since the price difference is insignificant and gives You more flexibility to use them for other voltages.
