I used to solder up whole houses in copper without a leak with good silver solder and paste flux Cable ends don't even have to be water proof but they probably are ...... another reason why they will last longer than a crimp connection? I dunno? I do know you want your connections air tight That is why I clean all my ends on a wire wheel when done soldering and the coat the connection with liquid tape .... But to each their own, it's all good as long as they are maintained clean !

I use a greenlee mechanical crimper, with only good quality electrical grade lugs, a good solder might be better but I have not had to replace any or seen any heat issues with these cable, of course I dont use any wire smaller than a #1 top of the line marine grade fine strand D.C. power cable, polyrad by general cable. I also have a 12ton hydraulic and a greenlee dieless hydraulic crimper but the greenlee with the rotating head works best for me.

The cables that I made are crimped and soldered.
Best of both worlds.

Scottyb,

As a former US Air Force electronics tech (radar reconnaissance) and TELCO engineer (30 yrs), I was merely trying to pass along some helpfull advice.

My point was not to use acid core solder or acid flux on electronics.

I used a crimping tool, purchased online, to do my cables. I did not have the background in soldering to know what would be the correct solder to use. I also used liquid tape to seal the ends.

I do know that you can't pull the crimped connections apart without destroying the cable, and that works for me

Either method will provide a satisfactory connection as long as it is done properly. Either method will cause problems when not done correctly.

Dave, nice to have your expertise here on the forum.

A good connection is mechanicley sound and corrosion resistant. Solder argument done.

"Crimps are used extensively in industrial, high amperage connections." cheap and fast.

Crimps are also used extensively in military aircraft, ships and submarines, the construction of which is not considered by most to be either cheap or fast.
