Yamaha G2 project advise
Hey there everyone. I'm new here. Just picked up a broke G2 (I think) Yamaha off craigslist. Yep. I'm that guy. Bought a cart with no batteries and a flat tire thinking I would bring it home, slap my 5.5hp Honda in there and have some fun!!! Woot!!!
But then I joined This forum, educated myself a little, and now I'm wondering if I should just try to get some batts and make'er right. So looking for some advise here. If I decided to keep it electric, how can I make sure the motor and controls are good before I spend hundreds on batteries? What are the main parts I want to test? Motor? solenoid? What else is expensive on these? Also how much is a charger? Didn't get one with it. I'm mechanically inclined, have built lots of fun projects but this is my first kart. The electrical testing I'll grasp pretty easily I hope since I've been in the electrical trade for 13 years now. But will take ANY advice I can get!! Thanks guys and gals! |

Re: Yamaha G2 project advise
Hey, is that "white zombie" in the back? If you no know what that is, look up plasma boy racing, you will like. Ok, back to the cart. Pop the cover off the speed control box (black plastic, about 6"x6"), check for broken wiper arm, fried microswitch, completely destroyed contacts. Thats number one. Check resistor coils & motor terminals (motor terminal has a nut on top & a nut below to secure the stud to the motor.... Twist the top terminal nut without supporting the bottom nut, and like magic, your good motor is now broken). Does your charge port have a white button in the middle?

Re: Yamaha G2 project advise
Yes I believe the charge port does have a white button. I already pulled the motor(without breaking studs) cause I wanted to see what the spline looks like for possible gas conversion.
Just got brakes un-locked and also the pedal lubed so it works properly again. I'll check what the othe stuff tomorrow but haven't noticed anything that looks obviously fried or damaged. Speed Contacts look good and are smooth. Are these carts pretty simple? Looks that way. Any way I can hook a 12 volt batt or two up to the motor temporarily just to make sure it spins and works? Thanks for the info! |

Re: Yamaha G2 project advise
Pretty simple to work on. Check the small leads on back of charge port. Or bypass that problem spot by hooking the small red wire to bigger red wire on charge port, same for small and larger black wire. Disconnect batteries while working on charge port, trust me. Do not hook anything to the motor on the bench, the armature end is not supported, will not tell you anything, and could cause damage. Only put power to motor while motor mounted on axle. There are plenty of threads/info on the testing with diagrams, look around.
