82 ezgo golf cart -gas

had to remove engine to replace piston ----after reinstalling engine , every thing worked fine except cart will go not go in reverse . im stumped . could wiring from shift lever box to generator be mixed up ??? help!!!! cart is a1982 ezgo with a gas engine !!!!!

Won't run in reverse, or starter won't spin in reverse?

thought it was generator ---its probably the starter --my bad not a mechanic -when I move handle to reverse I don't get any response .

Did it have reverse before? If so check your adjustment

The wiring diagram is in this manual. The forward/reverse switch changes the polarity to the starter, which also happens to be the generator too.

It looks like you have had this problem since 2014. Has it been sitting, or have you been driving it in just forward?

I would compare your wiring with the diagram. Then take the switch apart to clean the 4 big lugs. You also need a big ground to the engine, and the battery. Clean them all.



One more thought. When you get no response in reverse, do you at least hear the solenoid click?

took all the large wires off from the shift lever box to the starter /generator and clean them -still the same thing no reverse. I have been driving it in forward only for some time . also I do get a click when shift lever is in reverse position but starter wont kick in . im lost . cart is 35 years old and ive been keeping this running some how for 10 . might be time to get something else .can live with it with no reverse ,just aggravating some times. thx for the help!!!!!!!

I think you need to take the switch apart, and clean the big lugs. Not just clean the terminals on the back.

Does your battery die a lot, or does it stay charged?
