1996 GXT/Workhorse - Selector in Forward, goes in Reverse

Hello All!

So getting to know my new to me cart still. Im guessing that a GXT is also called a Workhorse, and might be a better way to refer to it...

Anyway, this past weekend more than once after putting the cart in reverse and backing up, even after putting the selector back into forward, the cart still backed up. I had to shift into neutral and then back to forward again to get things right.

Im not really familiar with how these things shift, and I havent looked into it much yet. Can anyone give me an idea of what I should check first? It does feel very stiff when shifting between F-N-R, so I assumed it was just needing some lube. But maybe there is something else? It looks as if one of the cables has been replaced in the past, but the other is still original.
