It isnt supposed to sit and idle. It was never designed to do that.

evidently its designed to either go or stop.
Correct. The idea is that you hit the pedal with the intention of moving.
However it does sound like are getting an excessive amount of drag from the clutch/belt.
I have two G1 cars here and while turning over I might feel a little wheel bump but they don't actually move.

Correction: I went and started both of my G1 cars. Sure enough they both rolled forward while the starter was turning. I was able to stop them with the brake.

The G1's with the primary clutch that has the big round cover usually move a little bit. The ones with the smaller clutch with the aluminum cover with the + sign, they usually don't move. The difference is the aluminum cover ones have a roller bearing shaft, meaning, the area at the bottom of the clutch that the bottom of the clutch touches, this actually spins and has much less friction than the newer style clutch.

The first pic is the older style (best G1 clutch).

The second pic is the newer style (not as good).

Every cart is different, but a "little" bit of movement when you engage the clutches is normal and typical. With a brand new belt it might roll a bit more. With the newer style clutch it will roll even more.

I’m thinking your crank seals are shot. My G1 moved with the S/G until it killed the battery. Changed the crank seals and it starts immediately. You may want to looks at my posts...the trials and tribulations of getting an old G1 back up and running.

Good suggestion.

The engine, in good working order, should start immediately say within 2 seconds. Maybe 3-5 seconds in the extreme cold. But those little 2 strokes were excellent little engines, super reliable and durable. If it's having a hard time starting quickly, you might have some issues to resolve.
