G2 gas not charging the battery when running.
Have a G2 gas noticed that when it is running that is only getting 12 volts to the battery when running. Took the starter/ generator out and had it bench tested and both the starter and the generator are good. Checked for broken wires out of the regulator. All tested good. Took the green wire off the regulator and jumped it to the battery and did not get 16 volts. I am lost in what to test next. How teat the regulator? What tells it to switch from starting to charging? Thanks

Re: G2 gas not charging the battery when running.
You have to ground the field wire to see the 16v.
My guess is bad voltage regulator. Spend a few more bucks on an oem one don’t get the aftermarket. They’re very hit or miss if they’ll work, not work, or blow the carts fuse and kill the cart all together. Once the engine starts the starter/gen is still spinning. Engine takes over and spins the unit faster at which point it turns into a generator when it’s being forced to spin faster than it could on its own. |

Re: G2 gas not charging the battery when running.
Yes. The VR just grounds the field (the little wires to gen) to make it charge. It turns on and off according to battery voltage when it needs to charge. The solid state on G9 turns on off and can make the lights go brighter you can see it. The G2 may have the old metal box type that actually is said to work better. But either will get the job done. When on it charges about 16v, however it charges less at lower rpm due to being a generator and not an alternator. You get 15A but only at higher rpm.
The gen is wound to run at start rpm. It wont run faster, so when the engine runs and makes it faster the gen does nothing. When the field is used it causes it to generate power. Electric motors take a lot of power with a load on them, which means you are not letting it turn at free rpm it is wound to run at. When a motor does run free it takes much less power. |
