Need to check the output voltage when the engine is running at full RPM. If your voltage regulator is bad it will cook any starter gen you put in it. Should be seeing about 14v or maybe a little more.
A bad regulator or damaged wiring to the regulator can make the generator output over 18v at full speed and that will roast the brushes and cause the commutator bars to melt off the armature.

Thanks for the replies. Very helpful.
I think I’m going to get another aftermarket unit and turn the speed back down to 16’ish and see if it can hold up.
As for the voltage regulator I ‘tuned’ it at full throttle on jack stands to about 13.2v (that was as high as I could get it to go).

was this at idle or part throttle? you should be seeing 13.5 to 14.5 at part throttle for proper charging.
