Default question about the speed resitors on the old melex electric carts

I know there are there different ones. my question is that i see there is a 5 gauge 3rd speed and a 6 gauage 3rd speed which one is faster? my cart feels like it only has 2 speeds right now. it like the last speeds not kicking in. any help would be nice

Welcome to BGW

It doesn't matter, when its wide open the resistors are out of the circuit completely. Wide open is straight from batts to motor. (if everything is working Right)

You can go to vintagegolfcartparts.com for wiring diagram for your old melex. Because most coils are wired together, the wires from the speed board go to different points along the coil. the first speed or slowest goes to the start of the coil, the power is lost by heating up ALL the coils. The remaining power then goes to the motor. The next speed skips the first set of coils, heats up the rest then goes to the motor. and so on. The top speed still goes to the coil board, but passes through no coils, then goes to the motor. I have seen some people wire the top speed directly to the motor, but you still need a wire going from the coil board to the motor to have any type of speed control.
