Yamaha 48V Charger Varistor (MOV)
I inherited a Yamaha golf cart and know very little about it. I am unsure of the model number or year of manufacture. We used the cart sporadically for a couple of months, adding water as needed. The cart then sat unused on the charger for two months and I found the batteries completely discharged when I went to use it.
The charger lights do not illuminate. I examined the charger (PN SCR-481717) and found the MOV in series with the input line voltage is faulty. I would like to find a replacement but I am unsure of the correct value. Any advice is welcome! Thanks. |

Re: Yamaha 48V Charger Varistor (MOV)
You said the batteries are completely discharged. What is your voltage of your battery pack. The yamaha 48 volt charger won't kick on unless the battery pack is 24 volts. That might be the reason you don't see any lights. I haven't seen to many of the varistor go bad. Hope this helps

I am sorry i was thinking of the new 48 volt yamaha charger. For the MAC chargers you need 40-50 Volt according to a MAC service manual.

No need to be sorry, I learned something, i thought the new JW2 Yamaha chargers needed 44 volts also? You learn something new everyday.

I all ways say if you don't learn something new everyday, its time to hang it up.

Re: Yamaha 48V Charger Varistor (MOV)
MOV would NOT be in series. It is always in parallel to shunt voltage spikes. If it's in series, it's not a MOV.

Re: Yamaha 48V Charger Varistor (MOV)
Thanks for the replies. The varistor was indeed bad (burned and crumbling) as well as a relay (open coil). Regarding the series/parallel thing, You are right! I am such a dork. I was recently working on a power supply with a thermistor in series with the mains transformer. When I posted, I was thinking thermistor and typing varistor...Anyway, the cart is up and running. :)
Thanks to all. |
