Rear axle off center
Hey everyone, I did a quick search and wasn’t able to find anything that looked like it would help me. I’m trying to determine what options there are to align the rear axle on my 05 precedent. I installed a 6” gtw lift and have found that the drivers rear tire is sitting 1cm further forward than the passenger side. This was the case with stock springs and hd springs. I saw other posts where incorrect springs were the problem, but like I said this was pre and post hd spring install. When I get a moment I am going to loosen the u bolts on both sides and see if I can shift the axle and tighten them back down to see if that does anything. Any help appreciated.

Re: Rear axle off center
I’ve also double checked that the springs are mounted in the correct direction.

Re: Rear axle off center
I was able to loosen both sides and shift the axle a little. Seems to be much better aligned, but I feel like it will probably shift around as I drive it since it’s just the ubolt on each side.

Re: Rear axle off center
You have the lift block on top of the transaxle and the leaf spring on top of it and then the new shock plate on top of that?
Be sure the bolt head in the leaf spring is fitted into the hole on top of the lift block. The bottom shock plate should be screwed into the axle. That u-bolt is not the only thing holding the axle in place. A picture would be helpful so we can see how it's mounted. |

Re: Rear axle off center
Kinda like Ccnorth said, there should be a bolt or pin in the spring pack and a socket in the perch mount or lift block that lines the spring up to the axle. Make sure it’s all lined up as the u-bolt is being tightened. I don’t know the exact torque spec for those u-bolt nuts off the top of my head but I usually put them on around 50 ft-lbs. Once they’re tight the axle literally can’t move unless you didn’t get the pins lined up correctly.

Re: Rear axle off center
I’ll post up a pic tomorrow. The bottom shock plate has a similar set bolt like the top plate that just fits into a hole to keep it stabilized, but it isn’t threaded into the axle housing. But yes, that’s the configuration of the setup as stated ccnorth. I appreciate the replies.

Re: Rear axle off center
Are you doing this adjustment to the axle with the tires on? If so, take them off so you can get everything aligned and bolted up correctly.
What size tires and rims on the cart? If you get the axle housing aligned and then put the tire back on and find the tire is still 1 cm forward then you need to pull the axle on that side and see what's going on. With the tire on, can you grab the tire and move it back and forth or up and down?? |

23” tires on 14” rims. No movement when wiggling tire. I did have them on when I adjusted it.

Re: Rear axle off center
What points are you measuring to for that difference?
If it's to a body panel then it's more likely the plastic body panel is tweaked, or could have been trimmed on the other side. It's really difficult to have a spring mount bracket, or the frame get bent enough to make the axle crooked. Not saying it's impossible, but there would have to be some obvious damage elsewhere. |

Re: Rear axle off center
I am going to put a pin in this for now. I measured by the distance from the tire sidewall to the gram at the front and rear of the tire on each side. But that’s not exact either. Before it even looked crooked a little bit now it looks more centered after loosening and tightening the bolts back down. Maybe one of the centering pins wasn’t in its guide hole after all. Either way, it’s really hard to tell right now as I have the cart stripped almost to the frame so I’m going to get it back together and then reconvene on it as needed. I appreciate the input and thoughts.
Gotta day I do enjoy this forum. Lots of great advice from some friendly folks. |
